Huron High School senior Alex Hassan is one of 13 recipients of the Class A $1,000 Scholar-Athlete scholarship, the Michigan High School Athletic Association announced Tuesday.

Huron senior Alex Hassan, pictured on the left in an AnnArbor.com file photo, is one of 32 MHSAA Scholar-Athlete award winners.

Hassan, a two-year starter at quarterback for Huron who threw for 1,723 yards and 11 touchdowns last season, was one of 32 scholarship winners across all classes. Each recipient will be honored during a halftime ceremony at the Class C boys basketball state championship game on Saturday, March 24, at the Breslin Center in East Lansing.

To be eligible, students had to participate in at least one sport in which the MHSAA sponsors a postseason tournament, carry at least a 3.5 grade-point average and submit an essay on why sportsmanship is important to educational athletics.

Hassan wrote in his essay:

“Sportsmanship and competition do not have to clash. Rather, when working in concert, they enhance each other, which leads to learning important lessons. To participate in competitive athletics is to enter into an unwritten pact, agreeing that by demonstrating excellent sportsmanship, one will respect an opponent’s character as much as try to defeat him.”

Hassan is considering attending Princeton University, a few other Ivy League Schools and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to study biomedical and biochemical engineering in the

Hello Football Family,

First I want to wish a Happy New Year to you and to those who you care for!!

I am very excited for 2012!! As we start something new we remember that every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end.
One of the hardest things to deal with is when we yearn for the past. We can all be guilty of it at times - some more than others. I have tried very hard to stay away from that and to learn from my experience and apply it to the present. The concept of time is an interesting one. Einstein would still be at it today, trying to figure it out and it is not something I will go into here as it would take too much “time” to discuss. :)

Most all of us make resolutions as we approach the New Year. I am resolute in my approach to continuing to work my tail off to make Huron Football a CHAMPIONSHIP Program, to bring the right Coaches into Huron and to challenge my players to be their very best - on and off the field. I will strive to do things the right way from having my players achieve academically, and to holding everyone in our program accountable as we begin our off-season training workouts and monitoring our players' behaviors and academics. We are about to venture into a crucial time period for our Program. We must maintain great grades and get into the weight room and attend our skill workouts. It takes work, hard work by everyone involved. There are no shortcuts to greatness. There will be obstacles in our way but I for one have never been one to go around the proverbial brick wall... I like to go through it and want you with me as we will do this TOGETHER!!

My Staff and I wish you and your family the very best as the New Year evolves. We are looking forward to working with you and your son as we prepare for the Fall of 2012.
Changes to the Program will be coming and announced as we move along. These changes should help move us forward in making our Program great. We will ask you and your son to be extraordinary in 2012 as CHAMPIONS are made and CHAMPIONSHIPS are won in the off-season and then dedicated to WINNING in-season. This time begins for us on January 9 - time to prepare for greatness!!

The 2012 AA Huron Football Calendars are here >>> 2012_Calendars.pdf. Please note that while the calendars can be used as a guide to go off of, they are always subject to change when necessary.

A Seth Harsch Thank You

Hello Football Family,

Thank you ALL for the support and actions taken in making Seth Harsch's celebration of life so wonderful. No words can describe the last few days. This is a very difficult, sad and tragic time that has brought us together, but yet a time where we are here coming together in a new light. Families do that! We lean on each other and share with each other – in good times and in tough times. It’s the bond, the glue, and the foundation tha
t can NEVER be broken between family members.

I am SO PROUD of the boys and staff that were there the last two days. We were 64 current players strong in their game jerseys at Seth's funeral and I also saw another 8-10 former players there Tues and/or Wed. Former players like: Criste, Helvie, and Gott (the eyes of the past are always upon us!). The current players did so GREAT in taking part in the ceremony from beginning to end. We also had about 15 current and former staff members there as well. It was so nice to see former coaches come back like: Coach Jacobs, Coach Majewski, Coach Nappo (just to name a few), as always our current staff was so supportive AND even our new staff members that had only met Seth maybe one time like Coach Carlisle, Coach Parker and Coach Chesney. These Coaches TRULY CARE about our kids - what a blessing!!

I KNOW Libby, Kevin and their families were very touched by our i 1000 nvolvement and as the Leader of the Football Program it was so wonderful to see our football family pull and work together like this in remembering Seth.
I cannot thank everyone enough for the support you gave in this time - between the food and the drivers and the attendance - it was just amazing. I firmly believe that in going through this together and sharing in our emotions in what we are feeling; we are bettering our family bond everyday. We ARE continually coming together. We ARE doing this as a family, in these times, because of Seth - for Seth. We WILL be a stronger family unit in having gone through this together in Seth’s honor.

Seth will be a brother for life. He will always be in our mind through thoughts and prayers, and in our hearts on and off the field. He will never, ever be forgotten. In this tragedy know that Seth brought us all closer…. this upcoming season and the one’s to follow are for the "Big Man" #61 - because in OUR football family the eyes of the past are always looking upon us and because of that, #61 will always be looking….

I (we) THANK YOU ALL!!!! GOD BLESS!!!!

Love,
Coach Sleeve
and the Football Staff
